Our walk today takes us over the Hill o’ Fare, from east to west. It is a fairy short walk, which should be managed by all participants. Therefore, there will not be a chance of an alternative shorter walk. At the end of this walk, our bus will transfer us to a local venue where we shall have our annual festive meal.
The walk commences on the B977 Raemoir/Echt road near the farm of Wester Tillyshogle, where a forestry track leaves the road (NGR 743 035) on the west side. This track heads into the forest and after about 200m, go right (north) at a T-junction. This wide track swings NW to reach a junction of paths near a high voltage overhead power line. Take the left hand path and climb SW above the Landerberry Burn which eventually emerges from the trees and skirts the edge of the forest on your right, heading towards Graymore (393m). (VARIANT), At (NGR 718 036), a path heads off to the left (SSW) and soon reaches a T junction, where the left path climbs E to the summit of Meikle Tap (359m) with fine views over the lower Dee Valley. This variant is for those wishing to climb Meikle Tap and then return to the main path below Graymore. From here, (NGR 718 036), the path first climbs towards Graymore but, before gaining the summit, swings SW heading for Blackyduds (433m) to eventually reach a remote locked estate bothy near a T junction on the eastern slopes of the Hill of Corfeidly (NGR 678 018). Head west from the bothy on a good path for about 500m before swinging N to reach an unnamed top (471m). Those wishing to visit the highest point on the walk, must leave this path and walk NE for about 1km to the trig point on Tornamean (453m). Return to the main path near the 471m unnamed top and continue NW downhill along the shoulder to reach a path which heads westwards towards Dunswell and onwards to reach the B993 road near Netherlands Farm where our bus will be parked.
