Today, we are back between Deeside and Donside to walk the lesser known hills in this Cromar valley. Hamish Clunas suggested this walk and your Committee included it in the 2017 Programme. This walk is a circular one, so members who require a shorter, or different, walk – for safety reasons, please indicate your intentions with your committee member in charge of the bus.
The walk commences in the centre of Tarland (NGR 481043). Walk NW past the post office and follow the road as it curves right. Go across the next junction and continue NW towards East Davoch (make sure you stay right when the road goes left to Knockieside). Ignore the turn to East Davoch and stay NW following a track signed for Boultenstone. Go through a gate at approx. NGR 461 078 and head NE through open fields for a few hundred yards until you reach another gate, on your left, with a blue direction marker. Go through this gate and follow a path NW’wards through the trees to bend NE’wards to go through another “newish” gate on to open ground. Continue ascending to a gate in a high deer fence. Go through this gate and join a path to eventually climb (E’wards) to the summit of Broom Hill (576m). A good path goes E’wards for approx. 1.5miles to the summit cairn of Pressendye (619m). From this summit cairn, descend on a good path (blue route) towards the west side of Pittenderich. When this track starts going east, take the path going SW’wards on a sharp turn (blue route). Follow the blue route and just after it curves SE, watch for a faint path (blue route) going off to the right, near some overhead electricity power lines. Follow this faint path SW’wards which, after crossing a stile, squeezes between two lines of trees, crosses a burn on a “newish”footbridge. Continue SW’wards down to a gate. Go through this gate, turn S’wards and head back into the village of Tarland on an unclassified metalled road coming down from Rowan Bank. Our bus will be parked (NGR 481 043) in Tarland.
Walking distance approx. 10 miles
Bus departs at 4.30pm.
