The walk today follows the route of an old drove road from Glen Esk to Deeside known as the Fungle Road. This walk is a through-one, so anyone wanting a different, or shorter walk should travel with the bus to the finishing point and do their own thing from there. This is possible, so if walkers should require a shorter walk, please advise your committee member in charge today prior to leaving the bus.
- The walk commences at the village of Tarfside in Glen Esk (NGR 492 797). Follow the green “right of way” signpost N’wards up the east side of the Water of Tarf to soon cross the Burn of Tennet and ascend the ridge of the Burn of Kenddloch. At NGR 499 853, the path splits. Take the right track between Tampie (723m) and Mudlee Bracks (688m) and heads N’wards for about 4miles into the Forest of Birse area. Continue N’wards, cross the Water of Feugh and ascend the “Gwaves” ravine to a stone shooting lodge. Descend on the path, past a burn in a grassy hollow below Carnferg (525m). Continue to (NGR 517 937) and our route leaves the wide track and turns left on to a rather indistinct path to eventually cross the Allt Dinnie burn to arrive at “the Guard”. Just beyond this house continue N’wards to descend the east side of Craigendinnie Hill, past the “Rest and Be Thankful”. Continue downhill past Parkside Farm to gain Birsemore Loch. In a short distance, our route emerges on to the B976 South Deeside Road. Cross the bridge over the River Dee to our bus parked at NGR 524 980, The Boat Inn.
Walking distance approx 13miles.
- From Aboyne, walk into the Bell Wood and continue to the horse farm at Bellwade. Walk through the wood back to Aboyne. Walking distance approx. 5 miles
- From Aboyne, cross the bridge over the River Dee and join the “Fungle Road” track. This path goes up the east side of Craigendinnie as far as “the Guard”. Go East at NGR 520 954 and join a road at NGR 534 968. Go NW ‘wards back to Aboyne.
Walking distance approx. 4.5 miles.
