N.B. 8.00am start from Aberdeen.
Today, we are back in one of the lesser known Angus Glens – Glen Lethnot. Frank Kelly suggested this walk and it was included in the 2015 Programme. The outing today is a circular one, so members who require a shorter walk – please indicate your intentions with your committee member in charge of the bus.
N.B. If the bus has a problem manoevring the tight bridge at Bridgeend, the walk will commence here, rather than at Craigendowie – adding approx. 1.5 miles to the walk (but we will hope that this situation does not occur).
The walk commences at Craigendowie (NGR 521 694), about 1.5miles from Bridgend in Glen Lethnot, and our bus will remain here all day. From the bus head NW’wards for about 500 yards on the metalled Glen Lethnot road, and take the path on the left which continues NW’wards to a col between Craig Duchrey and Tamhilt. Remain on the track as it curves left and ascends the eastern slopes of Tamhilt. Descend briefly to a junction. Turn left and pass through an open gateway in the fence. Follow the track as it doubles back on itself, then curves right and heads W’wards over Tamhilt. At the next junction, go straight ahead. At the next junction, midway along the ridge, continue SW’wards. After passing through a gap in a fence, the track curves right and descends before climbing to the summit of Hill of Mondurran. From the summit, descend W’wards to a col between Hill of Mondurran and Mount Sned. Cross a wooden stile and continue S’wards on an indistinct path contouring round the East side of Mount Sned. Continue to a second stile (do not cross this stile), but bear left and follow the fence SE’wards to meet a track. Follow the track E’wards up onto Hill of Garbet and continue E’wards over this broad ridge to a track junction. Turn left and descend N’wards over the Shank of Ducharr. Continue E’wards, ignoring a track branching left and go on to the next junction. Head left, descending to the base of the valley, cross two small streams and continue E’wards to Nathro Lodge. Head E’wards to Nathro Farm and continue down to cross the Burn of Calletar by a bridge and onwards to Craigendowie – our start point. Our bus will be parked here at a convenient spot (NGR 521 694).
Walking distance approx. 10 miles.
If the walk commences at Bridgend. Near the end of the walk, take the path to the east of Nathro Lodge (NGR 498 688) and head S’wards and then E’wards round the N’ern slopes of Berry Cairn to eventually reach the bus at Bridgend.
Bus departs at 4.00pm.
In the event of an emergency arising, the person in charge of the outing should be contacted, if possible, before the police are contacted.
Relevant telephone number for Grampian police is 0845 600 5700 or 999.
Committee member in charge today is Frank Kelly
