Walk Notes

The bus will be parked at the Spittal car park all day and there are various possibilities for walks from there. 4 walks are suggested below, however you may wish to do a different walk, please advise your Committee member in charge today of your intentions, For safety reasons, please indicate to the Club’s day organiser which route you will be taking.

  • A low level walk round Loch Muick – walking distance 8 miles.
  • The Capel Mounth circular. From the Spittal bus park, head towards Loch Muick but at NGR 304 846 veer left at a signpost (Glen Clova by Capel Mounth) and ascend gradually S’wards on a wide track for about 5 miles, passing along the west side of Black Hill and Ferrowie before descending into Glen Clova to join a path (NGR 284 772) heading N’wards towards Moulzie farm. Continue N’wards crossing the South Esk on a new footbridge and veer W’wards to Bachnagairn. Cross the foot bridge here and climb N’wards to reach Sandy Hillocks stables (NGR 256 808) above Corrie Chash. Descend the refurbished “streak o’ lightning” path to reach the southern shore path of Loch Muick (NGR 273 818). Head NE’wards along this path for about 3.5 miles to arrive back at the Spittal bus park.

Walking distance approx. 14 miles.

  • “5 Tops” circular walk. From the “Capel Mounth” path in walk 2, keep right along the south side of the loch and then climb the zig-zag path above the Black Burn. Continue along this high route above Loch Muick to the stables (NGR 256 808). From here, follow the path about NW to the summit of Broad Cairn (998m). Continue NW’wards to the summit of Cairn Bannoch (1012m) and onwards over the plateau to Carn an t-Sagairt Mor (1047m). From this summit descend E’wards to pick up a path heading towards The Stuic but, at approx. NGR 227 849, veer S’wards to the summit of Carn a’ Choire Bhoidheach (1110m). Return to the main path and head NE’wards to the summit of Lochnagar (1155m). Return to the Spittal bus park either, by way of the Glas Allt Shiel and the northern side of the Loch Muick path, OR traverse the Lochnagar plateau, descend the “new ladder path” towards Fox’s Well and descend to Allt na Giubhsaich and the Spittal bus park.    Distance 18 miles

(4) Lochnagar (1155m). Follow the signposted path at Allt na Guibhsaich uphill towards Clais Rathadan, past Fox’s Well memorial, then up the new “Ladder” path to the plateau. Go round the rim of the North East corrie past Cac Carn Mor to the summit of Cac Carn Beag (1155m). Your return may be made either by retracing the inwards route or by descending into the valley of the Glas Allt burn to Glas Allt Shiel and then NE’wards along the north side of Loch Muick to the Spittal car park
