The walks today are centred on the hotel car park at the Spital of Glenshee (NGR.111.699) from where there are several possible objectives depending on weather conditions and individual capabilities.
The hills in this area are mainly rounded with mossy turf and heath on the upper slopes and summits, but there are patches of boulders and scree. A good landrover track extends for about five miles up the east side of Gleann Taitneach providing easy access. In Glen Lochsie, the other access route, there is a private road from the Spital to Dalmunzie Hotel and then a track from Dalmunzie Farm up the glen to the ruins of Glenlochsie Lodge. The overgrown trackbed of a disused private railway also runs up the glen to the site of the lodge.
Four possible objectives are listed for your consideration:-
(1) Carn Binnein (917m., 3007ft): One of the few sharp-pointed hills in the area, lies on the east side of Gleann Taitneach and is a good viewpoint. Access is from the glen track, then via Allt Aulich, returning the same way
Walking distance = 11 miles + 480 metres ascent
(2) Glas Tulaichean (1051m., 3447ft): This is the highest hill on the west side of the glen. A circular route can be followed from Gleann Taitneach to Glen Lochsie or vice-versa. The route runs from Glean Taitneach via Allt Easgaidh and Glas Choire Beag, climbing the north east ridge of Glas Tulaichean, and then descending the Breac-Reidh ridge to Glenlochsie Lodge before continuing down the glen via Dalmunzie.
Walking distance = 14 miles + 650 metres ascent.
(3) Carn an Righ (1029m., 3375ft) : this is a longer walk to an outlying hill further to the west. A suggested route is by Gleann Taitneach, Allt Easgaidh, Glas Choire Beag and upper Gleann Mor, returning the same way
Walking distance = 17 miles + 650 metres ascent.
(4) Beinn Iutharn Mhor (1045m., 3428ft): This is another outlying hill reached by the same route as Carn an Righ, most of the way, but it lies to the north of Mam nan Carn. The return may be made by reversing the outward route or, alternatively, descending to Loch nan Eun and then following the Allt Easgaidh and Gleann Taitneach back to the Spital.
