Walk Notes

Walk 1: Glas Tulaichean Circular

This Glas Tulaichean circular route is a 22.5km route ascending the Glas Tulaichean Munro, descending to Loch nan Eun, then following the outflow (Allt Easgaidh) along Glen Taitneach back to rejoin the outward route and Glenlochsie Farm. The full walk taking in Loch nan Eun should take around 7 to 7 1/2 hours to complete including 1/2 hour stop..

From the bus head North West up the road towards the Dalmunzie Castle Hotel. Walk past the hotel & Glenlochsie Farm to gain the dismantled railway track which heads up the glen towards the ruin at Glenlochsie Lodge (Waypoint 2 – Grid Ref. NO 062 727) . Follow the wide landrover track uphill for 4 km until you reach the top at the Munro Glas Tulaichean (1051m). At the top, weather permitting, there should be good views of the numerous hills to the North. Before continuing from the summit check you have time to complete the circuit, approximately 4 hours will be needed to descend and return the remaining 12.5km via Loch nan Eun to the bus. Follow the faint path downhill on the North East ridge of Glas Tulaichean which leads towards Loch nan Eun, taking care not to veer off to the right on the ridge which heads towards Sron na Saobhaidh. The path may be difficult to see for the last 0.5km prior to reaching the Loch but a short cross country section will take you to a better path (Waypoint 4 Grid Ref. NO 060 778). At the loch take the path through the narrow gap which heads downhill South Eastwards following the line of the loch outflow ( Allt Easgaidh)  until this path joins the wide land rover track in Gleann Taitneach. Follow this track all the way down the glen until you reach the old bridge at the Spittal of Glenshee where the bus will be parked nearby.

If you feel time is short when you reach the summit of Glas Tulaichean you can retrace your steps back to the bus.

Walking distance approx.  14 miles/22.5km. Ascent: 812m.

Walk 2: Short Walk- Glen Lochsie Circular

This walk is suitable for most walkers & should take approximately 4 1/2 hours to complete including 1 hour for stops. However it may be more than an hour for rest stops should you sample the fine coffee (& hopefully tablet) at the Dalmunzie Castle Hotel.

The walk starts at the Spittal of Glenshee & follows the route as for the start of Walk 1 in up to the ruin at Glen Lochsie Lodge, returning on the South side of the Glen Lochsie Burn via the land rover track through the two large plantations.

The walk can also be completed in a clockwise direction if you wish to include a stop at Dalmunzie Castle Hotel near the end of your walk. In this case head SW from the path following the landrover track into the first plantation then continuing to the ruined Glen Lochsie Lodge at approx 6 km from start point before heading back SE along the path to the North of the Glen Lochsie Burn.

Walking distance approx. 7 miles / 11.8 km. Ascent: 267 m
