Walk Notes

Today, we are back on Donside to walk the lesser known hills in this valley. This walk is a through-one, so members who require a shorter, or different, walk – for safety reasons, please indicate your intentions with your committee member in charge of the bus.

The walk commences on the A97 (Mossat /Huntly) road at the village of Rhynie (NGR 498 271). On an unclassified road, walk E’wards and cross the Water of Bogie. Take a secondary track and head S’wards towards Barflat and Bankhead farms to eventually reach a track junction near the Iron Age fort on Cairn More. Go left and continue southwards to reach another track junction (NGR 507 235). Go right and contour the east side of Badingair Hill and Brux Hill to gain a path junction at NGR 495 204 on the north side of Edinbanchory Hill (466m). Turn left and head SE’wards to climb on a good path to the top of Lord Arthur’s Hill (518m). Descend from the top down the Fouchie Shank to eventually reach Dubston Farm. Cross the bridge over the Blacklatch Burn and walk into Tullynessle, where the bus will be parked near the church (NGR 558 195).

Walk Two

The same starting point as walk one but avoiding climbing up Lord Arthur’s hill.

On track junction (NGR 507 235) here you will carry on straight ahead on the quarry road, this is an old farm track, follow this until you come to the disused quarry (there is still a hut there with a visitors book to sign). Go past this and follow your way down the hill, keeping on the land rover tracks. You will come to a small stream that is easily crossed. Once over keep following the path past Terpesie Castle to eventually reach Dubston Farm. Cross the bridge over the Blacklatch Burn and walk into Tullynessle, where the bus will be parked near the church (NGR 558 195). till you get to the main road.

Total distance: 12468 m
Max elevation: 461 m
Min elevation: 171 m
