Walk Notes

O.S.Map 37 (Strathdon).

N.B. Clock Change – 8.00am (GMT) start from Aberdeen.

Today, we are back on Deeside to walk the hills to the north side of Ballater. John Stewart suggested this walk and your Committee included it in the 2016 Programme. This walk is a through one, so members who require a shorter, or different walk – please indicate your intentions with your committee member in charge of the bus.

The walk commences on the B972 Pass of Ballater road (NGR 364 970), just before the access turn-off road to the farm of Balmenach. (walkers – please exit the bus quickly as this is quite a busy through-route). The track leaves the road on the north side and begins to climb, following a burn, to pass through some trees before crossing the shoulder of Creagan Riabhach (533m) and heading N’wards towards the summit of Peter’s Hill (568m). From this summit, return to the inwards track and head N’wards. Go straight ahead at a split in the path at NGR 356 014 to arrive at a T junction at NGR 357 026. Turn right here and head E’wards along the south side of Morven (871m) for almost 2 miles to a path heading southwards (NGR 385 022). Take this path which soon crosses the Rashy Burn and continues S’wards down Glen Coulsden on the east side of Crannich Hill (556m). The route eventually swings SW’wards near a small lochan and descends to the farm of Milton of Tullich and the A93 North Deeside Road, where our bus will be conveniently parked.

Walking distance approx. 10 miles

Bus departs at 3.00pm.

In the event of an emergency arising, the person in charge of the outing should be contacted, if possible, before the police are contacted.
