Walk Notes

Today’s walk visits some of the hills to the south east of Ballater and the Dee valley.
The walk commences on the A93 Aboyne to Ballater road at Cambus O’ May near the site of the old railway station (NGR 422.975). Take the road westwards for a short distance before dropping down towards the bank of the River Dee and crossing the river at the footbridge. Once across the bridge take the track to the left which follows the riverbank to come out on the B976 South Deeside Road near a bend in the river. Just to the right of this a track leaves the road in some trees and heads southwards past a farm and the site of an old mill, and then continues following the bank of the Pollagach Burn southwards up the glen. Continue following the main burn as it turns westwards and climb up the col at NGR 390.935. From here turn right and follow the ridge of Pannanich Hill northwards over the summit (and trig. point) of 601m/971 ft and then a lower top of 578m/1895 ft. Continue northeastwards down the ridge for about a mile to reach the trees and pick up a path at NGR 400.968 which heads through the trees to reach the B976 South Deeside Road opposite Glascorrie Farm. Turn right along the road eastwards for about three-quarters of a mile to NGR 415.972 where a track branches off to the left and heads for the footbridge across the river Dee at NGR 421.976. Across the bridge the bus will be parked at the drop-off point near the old railway station.
