Walk Notes


Today’s through walk takes us to the South of Banchory starting near the Nine Stanes stone circle to climb over Kerloch and descend on forest tracks to Bridge of Bogendreip south of the village of Strachan.

Those wishing to visit the stone circle should walk approx.100m West from the drop off point along the minor road with the stone circle on the right.

Walk 1:-We start today’s walk on a minor road near “The Nine Stanes” stone circle at NGR 724911 and walk Southwards on a track through Garrol Hill Woods. At approx. NGR 721901 go through a gate / gap in a stone wall to gain another track which continues Southwards over open ground. At NGR 715883, just before the trees take the path on the right heading NorthWest to Glenskinnan and at NGR 707889 take the track on the left, SouthWestwards,  which climbs steadily through the forest to emerge onto open ground and eventually reach the summit of Kerloch 534m. From the summit trig point continue SouthWest on a track which descends through the trees to a track junction at NGR 684867, take the track on the right, (The Builg Road) NorthWestwards, just north of the Builg Burn. Continue on this track which turns Northwards (ignore tracks on the right to Hare Hill and left to Heatherhaugh) to a junction of tracks south of Craig of Dalfro. NGR 670892. Take the track on the left which continues Northwards on the West side of Craig of Dalfro to reach the B974 road at Bridge of Bogendreip NGR 663910 where the bus will be parked.

Walk distance approx. 9 miles / 14.5km. Ascent 1434ft / 437m

Walk 2:- For those requiring a shorter walk remain on the bus travelling Westwards  for approx. 2.5 miles and get off the bus at a minor road on the left, signposted public footpath/Altair, just beyond Moss-side NGR 694915. Take the track Southwards passing Pitreadie farm to NGR 688908 which continues Southwards along the edge of the forest. The track soon turns Westwards on the south side of Craig of Dalfro and then Northwards to reach Bridge of Bogendreip where the bus will be parked.
