Walk Notes

Today’s walk takes us from Glen Gairn in the Upper Dee Valley over Morven hill and down to the Deskry Water and Boultenstone Outdoor Centre near the Don Valley.

The walk commences at Lary Farm in Glen Gairn (NGR.336.003) where we take the road up the glen of the Lary Burn to near its junction with the Morven Burn at (NGR.341.022). Here a track branches off eastwards to contour the south slopes of Morven. We leave the track near one of the burns coming down off the hill and climb northeastwards up Morven to reach the summit of the hill (871m., 2856 ft). From the summit cairn, if the weather is fine, we get a widespread view of the Dee Valley and the Howe of Cromar.

From the summit descend northwards towards the Deskry Water, picking up a track at the Bothy of Preas Whin (NGR.382.053). From here we head for the farm of Badnagoach (NGR.389.086), either by continuing along the bank of the Deskry Water or by branching eastwards over the Hill of Allamuc (350m., 1148 ft) before heading northwards. From Badnagoach the track continues northeastwards following the Deskry water to approach the trees around Deskryshiel, before passing the house and coming out on the A.97 Dinnet to Strathdon road just beyond Boultenstone Outdoor Centre, where the bus will be parked (NGR. 411.109).
