Walk Notes

Today’s walk starts in the village of Ferryden to the South of Montrose and follows the coast passing the Lighthouse at Scurdie Ness, Usan, Elephant Rock and Boddin Point before returning to the bus in Ferryden at approx. 713566.

Walk 1:- Head East along the road (there are public toilets on the left) continue for approx. 0.5 mile along the road, turn right at a signpost for Lighthouse leading into Victoria Square and then go left along narrow path in front of a shed to reach the road above and follow this East to Scrurdie Ness Lighthouse, constructed by David A Stevenson in 1870. Pass the lighthouse and go through a gate to follow a grassy path above the shoreline. When you reach the fence, go through the gate and cross the field towards Mains of Usan. Use the gate to the left of the farm buildings and turn left on a muddy track, passing ruined buildings and an old mausoleum. Keep following the track around the headland and before reaching Usan turn right to climb up a grassy field to a gate. Pass through the metal gate and turn left onto a track into Usan. Turn left at the end of the track and follow it down past cottages towards a ruined tower and entrance to salmon farm where sign directs you right (signed: Beach Access). Don’t go down the steps but instead follow a path along the edge of a field above the cliffs with a fence on your left. Keep following the path as it swings uphill, look out for Elephant Rock on the left below and soon reach Dunninald Cemetery and Chapel of St.Skae. (It is worth a look to spot the grave of George James Ramsay, the inscription appears to claim he died 19 years before he was born (1859 – 1840). Continue on the path along the cliff edge to reach a house at Boddin.(708536). There are good views down to the Lime Kilns at Boddin Point dating back to the 1700’s. At the house turn right and head uphill on to a minor road, cross the rail bridge then turn right at the road junction. The road bends left and continue straight on (ignoring sign for Usan), passing the grounds of Dunninald Castle on the left. Bear right at the next junction to pass Balkiellie and follow signs for Ferryden where the bus will be parked.713566.
