Walk Notes

Please note that the bus fares have been increased by £1. It would be greatly appreciated if walkers would bring along the exact fare on the day.

N.B. 9.00am start from Aberdeen.
The walk today eventually follows an interesting part of the coastline to the south of
Montrose. We will be dropped off near the end of the metalled road to Scurdie Ness
lighthouse, near the village of Ferryden (NGR 716 567). Our bus will remain here all
day and will be our pick-up point at the end of the walk.
This walk is a circular one, so members who require a shorter, or different walk –
please indicate your intentions with your committee member in charge of the bus.
The walk commences near the village of Ferryden. From the bus, walk SE’wards
towards Inchbrayock and continue towards Usan House (do not go to Usan House).
Approx. 400 yards before the house, turn right on the metalled road and head
W’wards towards the railway line – do not cross the railway line.
Turn left before the line and continue SE’wards towards Usan village – (do not go to
Usan village). Before the village, head SW’wards to cross the rail line and then
continue W’wards towards Dunninald Castle. At a bend in the road, before the castle
(NGR 705 540), a secondary road goes off SE’wards, crosses the railway at a bridge
and heads towards Boddin Harbour and Boddin Point. At the end of this road (approx.
NGR 713 535), a path goes left towards a cemetery and continues past Black Craig
and Usan village. Our onwards route passes Long Craig and Rashick Knap before
reaching Mains of Usan. Pick up a path above this farm and head N’wards towards
Scurdie Ness lighthouse. From here, go W’wards on the unclassified road back to our
bus near Ferryden (NGR 716 567).
Walking distance approx. 8 miles.
Bus departs at 2.30pm.
In the event of an emergency arising, the person in charge of the outing should be
contacted, if possible, before the police are contacted.
Relevant telephone number for Grampian police is 0845 600 5700 or 999.
Committee member in charge today is Alistair Condie
