Walks 1 & 2 are through walks whilst walk 3 is a circular starting in Edzell. Anyone wishing to do something different must discuss this with Frank Kelly who is in charge of the bus today.
Walk 1. Hill of Wirren
The Hill of Wirren is a large featureless mass of hill over 2000 feet high, between Glen Esk and Glen Lethnot in Angus. The walk commences at NGR 543 789 near Milden Lodge in Glen Esk. Proceed along the road in a West then South Westerly direction for about half a mile to where a secondary track branches left at NGR 535 787 & then passes through trees to cross a bridge over the River North Esk. Turn right (Southerly direction) after crossing the bridge and continue past a junction of paths at NGR 536 778 & keep heading in a Southerly direction. At the next junction continue S’wards crossing over Burn of Beag. Follow this burn uphill to reach another burn – Burn of Garrat. The route leads upwards to the 678m summit of Hill of Wirren. From there, the lesser top of West Wirren lies about a mile to the northwest of this. Our route, however, turns E’wards for about a mile to reach the top of East Wirren (637m) with its trig point a few yards further east of this. Descend E’wards to pick up a track which heads over the Hill of Corathro before descending E’wards to Little Tullo Farm. Head SE’wards to Gannochy Farm and the B966. Turn right and in about a mile, you will enter Edzell and our bus will be conveniently parked at NGR 598 691.
Walking distance is approx. 13 miles.
Walk 2. Hill of Corathro
This shorter walk commences at NGR 574755 (between Auchmull & Craigoshine). Head South to gain the footbridge (NGR 574 753) over the River North Esk & once across head South West to gain the track & head Southwards to a junction of paths at NGR 582 738. Turn right here & head North West & just beyond Cornescorn take the left hand branch at NGR 571 742 to proceed Southwards bypassing the West side of The Crannel. Follow the ridge in a South Westerly direction from The Crannel uphill towards Hill of Corathro. The route from here is the same as in Walk 1 from this hill back to the finishing point at Edzell.
Walking Distance is around 8 miles with about 900 feet of ascent.
Walk 3. Rocks of Solitude
This walk commeces in Edzell & crosses the highland boundary fault line, the physical division between lowland & highland Scotland. Take the narrow lane near the garage/petrol station & head Eastwards towards the River North Esk. Turn left before the river (do not cross the footbridge) & follow the narrow path high above the river towards the main road at Gannochy Bridge. Extra care should be taken on this path as parts of it may have been affected by landslip. At the bridge go to the right (East) & cross the road to go through the blue door to enter the woods & grounds of Burn House. There are numerous paths in the woods that lead towards the Rocks of Solitude. It is advisable to choose a path that does not stray too far from the River North Esk. Follow the river upstream to gain the Rocks of Solitude at approx. NGR 589 731. Return by the same route to Gannochy Bridge & then by the road (or by the riverside path on the West side again) towards Edzell.
Walking Distance is around six & a half miles.
Bus departs at 5pm
