O.S. Map 54 (Dundee).
The walk today follows a part of the Angus coastline with some interesting cliff and shore scenery. The main walk is from North to South, however if the weather is unsuitable (strong winds and rain coming from the South) then walk may be reversed on the day which would mean starting at Arbroath & terminating at Lunan Village.
Main Route Details:
The bus will drop us off at Lunan Village and & it will then travel southwards to our pick-up point at the Arbroath promenade.
The walk commences at Lunan Village (NCR 690 516). From the bus, walk back to the secondary road by the church, turn left (southerly) to cross the bridge over the Lunan Water and continue southwards to about NGR 686 512. From here, go through a gate and take the path towards the prominent ruin of Red Castle, a 15th Century stronghold overlooking the bay and guarding the mouth of the Lunan Water. Descend to the beach and follow the sand dunes southwards for 1.5 miles to reach Corbie Knowe. From this point, follow the cliff top track towards and above Ethie Haven. It is now better to follow farm roads for a bit as the cliffs here are not very accessible for a couple of miles. Head South West and inland to reach North Mains farm. Head South Westwards from North Mains farm and take the road left (South East) towards Ethie Barns which soon bends round South West near West Mains and zigzags basically South West to soon reach the village of Auchmithie (NGR 680 442), to where the “Arbroath Smockie” is believed to have originated. From the village, go on the coastal path all the way to our pick up point at the Arbroath promenade (NGR 657 411), passing “The Deil’s Heid” and the “Needle E’e” on route.
Walking distance approximately 10 miles.
