N.B. 8.00am start from Aberdeen.
Today, we are back on Donside to walk the hills to the southeast of Alford. Hamish Clunas suggested this walk and your Committee included it in the 2015 Programme. Hamish did a “recce” on this walk, which we should be grateful, and his comments are included in this route sheet. This walk is a through one, so members who require a shorter, or different, walk – for safety reasons, please indicate your intentions with your committee member in charge of the bus, so early discussions can take place with the driver.
The walk commences in the village of Lumphanan (NGR 584 044), where we walk through the village on the unclassified metalled road N’wards, uphill, towards a bend in the road near the church entrance (NGR 583 047). Head NE’wards towards Glenmillan. Turn N’wards at Woodhill House (NGR 594 056) and head towards Cloak Wood. From here, head N’wards towards the B9119 Tornaveen/Tarland road. Go over a stile at a gate, cross this road and immediately head slightly downwards, on a good path along the north edge of the trees towards Glashholm farm. Continue N’wards on a faint path (not marked on map) and then veer E’wards on the same path (again, not marked on the map) to climb to the summit of Benaquallie (494m). From the summit, head NE’wards on a faintly beaten path to join a wide track (coming up from Broomhill Farm) going N’wards over Corennie Moor towards Glentough. (N.B. do not go W’wards towards Tillyfour NGR 593 105 – as this is not our finishing point). Go NE’wards on an old track over Red Hill (488m) and into the forest. Turn N’wards and follow the fence downwards and at approx. NGR 615 105 join a path going through this forest for almost 3 miles, crossing a farm road coming in from Kirktown of Tough, to head NE’wards and eventually reaching our finishing point at Tillyfourie (NGR 638 126) on the A944. Our bus will be parked near here.
Walking distance approx. 9 miles
Bus departs at 3.30pm.
In the event of an emergency arising, the person in charge of the outing should be contacted, if possible, before the police are contacted.
Relevant telephone number for Grampian police is 0845 600 5700 or 999.
