Walk Notes

O.S.Map 59 (St. Andrews).

N.B. 8.00am start from Aberdeen.

The walk today takes us south from Aberdeen towards the Firth of Forth Estuary and the Kingdom of Fife. Alistair Condie suggested this walk on his “suggestion sheet” and your Committee included it on our 2019 Programme. The logo for the Fife Coastal Trail is a blue and green disc with wiggly dark and white lines running from bottom left to top right. High tide predictions for Anstruther are 0737 and 2018, low tides is 1348. This walk is a through one, so members who require a shorter walk – please, prior to leaving the bus, indicate your intentions with your committee member in charge today.

(1) Main Walk: Lower Largo to Anstruther

We commence the walk in Lower Largo (NGR 417 025) and head E’wards on the Fife Coastal Trail on the waymarked path which runs along the shores of Largo Bay towards Earlsferry Links. (Those walkers who wish to do the Earlsferry “Chain Walk”, which passes beneath and along the cliffs, please take note of the tidal predictions, time available and the leaving time of the bus). Continue E’wards to Elie, Elie Ness lighthouse and a picnic site near Elie’s east links. Our route swings NE’wards along the clifftops past two castles, Long Shank and Partan Craig to eventually arrive at the old boat-building village of St. Monans. The Fife Coastal Trail continues E’wards past Pans Goat and Birnie Craig to soon enter the picturesque old fishing village of Pittenweem. On the far side of this village, head E’wards past Billow Ness golf course where our route swings N’wards to arrive at Anstruther (pronounced “Ainster”) Wester, where our bus will be waiting (NGR 566 036).
