Forvie Sands Circular

The revised walk today is a circular route from the bridge crossing the Ythan river along to the river estuary and then heading north to Collieston village before returning via the Sand Loch and Forvie Nature Reserve back to the Ythan Bridge.
Route 1: The main walk commences at the car park prior to the bridge over the river Ythan at Newburgh (NGR 001 268). Cross over the bridge and head South towards the Ythan estuary, before crossing the sand dunes towards the sea shore.
(Note that Forvie estuary is a large protected seal haul-out area and it is an offence to disturb these animals. Please therefore keep well back from the seals)
Continue northwards along the sands (with the North Sea on your right) and climb up to visit the old ruin of Forvie Church (NGR 021 266) before heading along the cliff tops to Hackley Bay and onwards to the village of Collieston.
Return via the Sand Loch and head inland across the nature reserve with the option of visiting the trig point (NGR 023 278) a short distance off the track. Finally arriving back at the car park.

Route 2: An alternative shorter route commences at the car park over the Ythan River (NGR 004 270) and head southwards to a track junction (NRG 005 269) where you turn left and continue on this track crossing the dunes to reach the ruins of Forvie Church. From here head north on a good track towards Hackley Bay and onwards to reach Collieston village. Return as above via the Sand Loch and the Nature Reserve to arrive back at the starting point car park.
