Loch Kinord Circular

6th February 2022      Bus departs Aberdeen at 9.00am

O.S. Map  37  (Strathdon and Alford)

The walk today starts at the small Deeside village of Dinnet near the shores of Loch Kinord.

Two routes are suggested, one is a walk along part of the Deeside Way track to Turnerhall returning via the Burn o’ Vat Visitor Centre and Loch Kinord .The second is a circular route around Loch Kinord using paths along either shores of the loch.

Route1:- The Deeside Way, Burn o’ Vat and Loch Kinord.

From the car park at Dinnet (NGR459987), cross the A93 road and access the Deeside Way heading westwards through the Muir of Dinnet, passing the Old Station House at Cambus o’ May, the White Suspension Bridge and Cutaway Cottage arriving at Turnerhall car park (NGR405980). Head northeast through the forest on good tracks for approx. 1.5 miles arriving at a signpost (near NGR415997) pointing eastwards towards the Vat Visitor Centre. Take this path through the woods which gives access to the Vat or directly to the Visitor Centre.

It is possible to visit the Vat by clambering through a narrow entrance in the rock wall to arrive at an inner chamber called the Cirque created by torrents of glacier melt water swirling and eroding the pink granite rock around 15000-20000 years ago.

Next head to the B9119 road and cross it entering tracks on the north side of Loch Kinord, passing the Pictish stone cross and returning to the bus parked at Dinnet.

Walking distance approx. 9 miles/15 km.

At a gate (NRG 451989) our route can go clockwise or anti-clockwise around the loch to the Vat Visitor Centre and a visit to the Cirque if required (see above). You can also view the Pictish stone and the small tree covered Crannog island on the loch containing the remains of an iron age dwelling built on a platform on the water. Return either via the north or south side of Loch Kinord to arrive back at the bus parked at Dinnet .
