The walk today crosses the Cairngorms from south to north via the Lairig an Laoigh right of way.
The walk begins at the car park at the Linn of Dee (NGR 063.897) where the path northwards through the trees leads to the estate road to Derry lodge, which is then followed. Beyond the lodge a footbridge is crossed and the track northwards to the west of the Derry burn is followed to another bridge at (NGR 040.958) where it crosses to join the estate road up Glen Derry. This is then followed northwards to cross the col between Beinn Mheadhoin and Beinn a’ Chaorainn to drop down to the Fords of Avon, where the stepping stones lead across the river to a hut (NGR 042.032).
From this point there is a choice of routes. The right of way continues northwards past Lochan a’ Bhainne and climbs over the shoulder of Bynack More before heading down northwestwards to the Bynack stable in Strath Nethy where the bridge is crossed and the track westwards towards Glenmore taken.
Alternatively, turn westwards from the Fords of Avon and follow the north bank of the river to climb to the saddle at (NGR 018.033) where the Garbh Allt burn is followed northwards down Strath Nethy to reach the Bynack stable. (This is slightly longer than the right of way).
The track westwards crosses the Allt na Feith Duibhe and joins the track from the pass of Ryvoan, which leads south westwards to Glenmore Lodge (NGR 987.0950, near where the bus will be parked.
