Walk
1Càrn a’Mhaim (1037M)

Take the route to Derry Lodge

Continue past crossing the Derry Burn via a footbridge. On the far side turn left and follow the track to reach the Luibeg burn, there is a bridge to cross the burn (NGR 013942)

On the far side, a path from the bridge rejoins the main path (NGR013939) follow the path for approx. 500m to reach a path on your right to begin the ascent.

The climb continues northwest, pretty directly up the slopes which get steadily steeper, with open ground and stones replacing the heather beside the path. Once above the level of the Coire na Poite crags the ground levels off once more and the route bears slightly left to join the south ridge heading up towards Càrn a’Mhaim.

From the summit retrace your steps to Derry Lodge and then back to the Linn of Dee car park

Distance approx. 14 miles.

Walk 2 – Sgor Mor (813m) and Sgor Dubh (741m). 

From the bus, (NGR 063 898) head W’wards passing (but not crossing) “White Bridge”.

At the bridge take the Lairig Ghru track NW’wards, passing “Chests of Dee” en route, to soon reach a burn at approx. (NGR 003 894). Head NE’wards up the valley to eventually gain the summit of Sgor Mor.

From this summit head E’wards, along the plateau to arrive at Sgor Dubh. Head SE’wards over the plateau to arrive at Carn an ‘lc Duibhe (630m).

Descend steeply SE’wards to re-join the incoming track and retrace steps to car park

Distance approx. 9.5 miles.

Walk 3Glen Quoich.

Take the route as if heading to Derry Lodge until you reach the Black Bridge (NGR 063 915).

Cross the bridge and immediately head back SE’wardsthrough Doire Bhraghad turn E’Wards (NGR 081 902). This path ascends the hillside for about 750m (distance) before swinging sharp left (NGR 088 904). Head N’wards across the plateau to the forest which then descends N’wards into Glen Quoich (NGR 080 936).

Head SE’Wards along the water until you reach The Punch Bowl. Continue down the path until you reach the road which can be followed back to Linn of Dee car park.

A slight detour can be made to pass Mar Lodge (NGR 099 902) before rejoining the road further along.

Distance approx 12 miles

Walk 4 The Red House Bothy

Leave the car park via the entrance road heading west to junction (NGR 062 897) keep straight ahead onto track and follow the river (on your left) to the White Bridge (NGR 019 885)  

Cross the bridge and continue along the path until you reach the Red House Bothy (NGR 003 869)

 Retrace the route with river in right back to car park

NB – Bus departs Linn of Dee car park for Aberdeen at 6.30pm. There may be a pub stop but only if time allows.

The bus is often fully booked which means any cancelled seats can be re-allocated to those persons on a waiting list. Anyone unsuccessful in booking a seat should contact Gilbert who will put them on a waiting list
