N.B. 8.00am start from Aberdeen.

This walk is advertised as a circular one, however, if the suggested walks below, are not to your liking, either in distance, or venue, – please indicate your intentions with your committee member in charge of the bus. A new footbridge near Derry Lodge has been built recently (but is only classed as “temporary”). Our bus departure time below allows those members ample time to include the summits to the west side of the River Derry. However, it must be noted that the stepping stones over the Glas Alt Mor (at the head of Glen Derry) and the stepping stones below the (Luibeg Footbridge) are no more, due to the August 2014 rain deluge.

  1. Sgor Mor (813m) and Sgor Dubh (741m). From the bus, head W’wards to almost reach White Bridge. Take the Lairig Ghru track NW’wards, passing Chests of Dee en route to soon reach a burn at approx. (NGR 003 894). Do not cross this burn, but head NE’wards up the valley to eventually gain the summit of Sgor Mor. From this summit head E’wards, along the plateau to eventually arrive at Sgor Dubh. Head SE’wards over the sometimes boggy plateau to arrive at Carn an ‘lc Duibhe (630m). From this top, descend SE’wards to re-join the Linn o’Dee/White Bridge track and back to our bus.

Distance approx. 11 miles.

  1. Beinn Bhreac (931m). Take the route to Derry Lodge and follow a good path up the east side of the Derry Burn. At approx. NGR 045 952, branch off and ascend (“heather bashing”) the hillside to soon reach a path near the head of Pol Bhat. Climb to the 2 tops of Beinn Bhreac by this path, Your return can be a reversal of the incoming track OR by descending on a faint path into Glen Quoich by Pol Bhat with a return into Glen Lui by the Clais Fhearnaig ravine and onwards to the bus at Linn o’ Dee. Distance – approx. 14 miles.

  2. Creag Bhalg (668m). Head E’wards along the metalled road and take the scenic path on the west side of the Lui Water (not marked on the map) past the salmon ladder and cateracts to eventually emerge on to the Derry Lodge track at approx. NGR 063 906. Continue N’wards on this wide track to Black Bridge. Cross the bridge and immediately head back SE’wards through Doire Bhraghad (do not cut E’wards through this forest) to a junction of tracks (NGR 081 901). This path ascends the hillside for about 750m (distance) before swinging sharp left (NGR 088 903) (do not continue onwards, as this path eventually peters out) and continues to climb to a fence without a gate. Go onwards and soon ascend, on an indistinct path, on your right, to gain the summit of Creag Bhalg. From the summit, retrace your steps (do not attempt to keep to the high ground and cut the corner, as you will get wet feet) to the incoming path and go N’wards across the plateau to the forest which then descends N’wards into Glen Quoich. Return into Glen Lui by the Clais Fearnaig ravine (SW’wards) and then onwards (S’wards) to our bus at the Linn o’ Dee carpark. Distance approx. – 11 miles. Bus departs at 7.00pm.

In the event of an emergency arising, the person in charge of the outing should be contacted, if possible, before the police are contacted.

Relevant telephone number for Grampian police is 0845 600 5700 or 999.
