Walk Notes


This week your club is heading to Strathdon with a hike in the Ladder Hills one of a former smuggling trails in this area. The main walk will be on tracks with a few stream crossings while the second walk will be a there and back again to the Lost Gallery. This area has a red squirrel population so maybe you will be lucky to see one. There will also be an opportunity to have your photo taken next to the famous “Lost” sign post. Hope to see you there!

Main walk

  1. Check out the coffee and cakes in Goodbrand and Ross before taking the North track that is directly across from the graveyard. Follow this for 3km and keeping left ignoring another track goes off the to right. Take the left at the T juntion.
  2. Ignore the path that goes left and keep on the path that curves NW and to the summit of Cairn Vachich.
  3. Following the track continue over this hill, cross the stream and then head up the track to the summit of The Socach.
  4. Traverse over The Socach and take the left at the fork in the road on the far side.
  5. You will come to a stream crossing and then turn immeatiely right on the track to cross a bridge and head East on the track which curves NE.
  6. Stay on the track the follows the Water of Nochty crossing the stream where required
  7. You will go through a forest section passing a metal monument on your left and then the Lost Gallery outdoor sculptures. Stay on this track and then cross the bridge over the Water of Nochty as the track heads South
  8. The track now heads South East through Lost and back to Bellabeg where the coach will be waiting.
