Walk Notes

Today’s walk takes us from Glen Gairn in the Upper Dee Valley over Morven (871m) and down into the west side of the Howe of Cromar at Logie Coldstone. If any member(s) require(s) a shorter walk, please liaise with the committee member in charge of the bus today.

The walk commences at Lary Farm in Glen Gairn (NGR.336.003) where we take the road up the glen of the Lary Burn. After about a mile and a half, cross the burn (NGR.341.022) and follow the track which branches off  NE’wards along the Morven Burn. After about 600m, the path veers eastwards to contour the south western slopes of Morven. We leave this track at about (NGR 358 026) near one of the burns coming down off the hill and climb north and then eastwards on a beaten track up Morven to reach the summit of the hill (871m, 2856 ft). From the summit cairn, if the weather is fine, we get a tremendous panoramic view of the Dee Valley and the Howe of Cromar. From the summit descend E’wards along the shoulder, passing a large cairn of boulders and soon veer S’wards on a wide track to pick up a path below Bad na Beinne, heading NE’wards towards Balhennie, to eventually reach an unclassified metalled road near Milton of Whitehouse. Walk E’wards along this road and branch off NE’wards just before Bridgend, through the forest to reach our bus parked at a convenient place in Logie Coldstone (NGR 435 044).
