O.S.Map 36 & 43 ( Grantown & Braemar).

N.B. 7.00am start from Aberdeen

Today’s walk crosses the Cairngorms from south (Deeside) to the north (Aviemore) by way of the “rights of way” path, known as the Lairig an Laoigh. The walk is a through walk, so those walkers not wanting to do this walk and prefer an alternative walk, please stay on the bus. Make your intentions known to the person in charge today before leaving the bus.

The walk commences at the Linn o’Dee car park (NGR 063 898) where we walk northwards to join the estate road leading to Derry Lodge. Do not cross the new footbridge over the Derry Burn but take the track to the right  as the footbridge at Derry Dam (NGR 039 958) is closed due to structural damage during the 2014 floods. Continue northwards up the length of Glen Derry to eventually cross a burn (Glas Allt Mor) to soon reach a split in the path at approx. (NGR 035 991). Take to right hand path, the other goes to Coire Etchachan, which continues northwards to soon climb to the highest point between Beinn Mheadhoin and Beinn a’ Chorainn at the true start of the Lairig an Laoigh path. Continue N’wards for about 1.5 miles to the stepping stones over the Fords of Avon (NGR 042 031). Continue N’wards past Lochan a’ Bhainne and eventually climb over the shoulder of Bynack More, passing Coire Odhar on route, before descending to a footbridge over the the Glas Alt burn in Strath Nethy. Once in the Pass of Ryvoan, head south westwards past Lochan Uaine and onwards to Loch Morlich, near the reindeer house, where our bus will be parked (NGR 977 097).

Walking distance approx. 19 miles.

Bus leaves today at 7.00pm
