N.B. Bus leaves Aberdeen at 8.00am

Today’s walk is the final part of The Cateran Trail. This is a through-walk, so if walkers feel that they want a different walk, or shorter walk, please indicate your intentions with your committee member in charge of the bus, prior to leaving the bus.

The walk commences at Kirkton of Glen Isla (NGR 213 604) where we walk west along the B951. At a signpost, take the steps down towards a suspension bridge over the River Isla. Follow the markers on the far side and your route soon curves left, crosses another path and soon heads uphill onto heather moorland. The waymarked route keeps to the left of a prominent cairn and eventually meets a drystone wall at a stile. Cross this stile and continue ahead to gain the woodland. Continue through mature trees, curving right to meet a gate and stile. Cross the stile and follow the field edge beside the wall. At the bottom, a gate and stile leads out onto a track – turn right along this. At Whitehills Farm, remain on the main track to Cammock Farm. Here, go through the gate and climb slightly. Turn right along a tarred road and remain on it at a junction. After 2km, Loanhead Farm is reached and further on the entrance to Kilry Lodge is met. Continue on this track to meet a minor road. Turn right along this road and left at a junction by a whitewashed cottage. The tiny road winds past Wester Derry and Knowehead Farm before a signpost indicates where to turn off. Head uphill, a second stile leads onto a grassy track, turn left and eventually a junction of tracks is reached.  Keep to the trail by following the track to the right. When a gate is reached, cross a small bridge. The route continues by a fence. At a corner it turns right uphill before descending quite steeply to cross two stiles. Head straight ahead and contour the slope. After another stile the route runs towards Ardormie. Turn sharp left down the approach track. Turn right onto a minor road and right again onto the B954. At a waymarker, go onto a grassy track. This leads downhill to Alyth where our bus will be parked NGR 246 485. Details of this walk including a route map can be viewed on the Walk Highlands website. There is a link to this site from our website. Once in Walk Highlands site choose “Long Distance Walks” & then opt for the “Cateran Trails” & choose this walk from the options shown.
