O.S.Map 43 & 44 (Braemar & Ballater).

Today’s walk takes us from Deeside (Invercauld) to Upper Glen Muick at the Spittal car park. Three routes are suggested below, but for safety reasons, please indicate to the day organiser which route you will be taking.

The walk commences at Invercauld car park (Keiloch NGR 188 914), crosses the River Dee and enters Ballochbuie Forest. At the first intersection go towards the Falls of Garbh Allt (NE’wards). Take the path going SE’wards along the west side of the Feindallacher Burn until you have to cross this burn on a small footbridge. Continue southwards uphill until Carn an t- Sagairt Beag. From here your three route options divide.

  1. The most straight forward route is to descend SE’wards into the valley of the Allt an Dubh Loch. There is no definite path but an indistinct track van be found adjacent to old fence posts in the middle of the valley. This eventually leads to a point on the north side of the cascading waterfalls overlooking the Dubh Loch. Continue (a very faint path)to join a good path on the west side of the Dubh Loch. Follow this path along the north side of the Dubh Loch and eventually descend to Loch Muick. You now have the option of taking a path on either side of Loch Muick to reach Spittal. Walking distance approx. 12miles.
  2. From the Bealach (NGR 212846), head southwards skirting Carn an t-Sagairt Mor to the col leading to Cairn Bannoch (3319 ft). Follow the ridge southwards from here towards Cairn of Gowal (3224 ft), before turning eastwards for Broad Cairn (3273 ft). From its summit descend eastwards to eventually reach the stables above Coire Chash. Either (a) descend the ”streak o’ lightnting” path to the wesrtern shore of Loch Muick and then head northeasrwards to the Spittal car park or (b) follow the land rover track which goes high above Loch Muick before descending steeply to the bridge over the Black Burn. From here’ follow the track northeastwards to the car park at the Spittal. Distance approx. 14 miles.

  3. From the Bealach (NGR 212 846), pick up the path coming from Carn an t- Sagairt Mor and follow it northeastwards towards The Stuic. Continue on this path towards the main top of Lochnagar(3789 ft). Descend either(a) back to the South Top then along the edge of the NE corrie, to drop down the path to reach Meikle Pap path and onwards to Allt na Giubhsaich or (b) descend into the valley of the Glas Allt, past the waterfall, to reach the Glas Allt Shiel. From here walk along the north side of the Loch to the car park at the Spittal of Muick. Walking distance approx. 13.5miles.

Bus departs at 5.30pm.
