Walk Notes

Our walks today are in the Invercauld Estate of Upper Deeside. We will be dropped off at the Keiloch carpark and our bus will remain here all day. Our main objectives are either to climb (1) Culardoch (900m), (2) Carn Liath (862m) and (3) a visit to the Slugain “Hidden Howff”, but this area throws up many great walks and although the three suggestions are fabulous outings, you may think otherwise and would propose another route to your liking. If any member(s) require a shorter walk – please advise your committee member in charge of the bus.

  1. Culardoch. From the carpark, head NW past Invercauld House. At a “Scottish Rights of Way” signpost for Tomintoul, follow this path N’wards past the west side of Meall Gorm. Continue N’wards on a wide track past the Bealach Dearg track and ascend to about NGR 186 987 where you veer E’wards to the summit of Culardoch. From the summit descend to pick up a path heading SW’wards along Glen Fearder to join our incoming track at NGR 178 962. Turn S’wards and follow this track back to the bus park at Keiloch.  Walking distance approx. 16 miles
  1. Carn Liath – Follow route 1 and go NW’wards past Alltdourie, then head into the forest. Take a right hand path at NGR 161 933 and follow it N along the E side of Glas Allt Beag for almost 3 miles. At approx. NGR 156 966, climb diagonally up over short heather moorland to gain the shoulder of the hill before striking N to the summit of Carn Liath (862m). Descend ENE from the top along its shoulder to gain a wide track at approx. NGR 180 981 and follow this track S towards Invercauld House and onwards to the carpark at Keiloch.      Walking distance approx. 12 miles.
