O.S. Map 44 Ballater, Glen Clova & surrounding area

Todays walk starts at the Invermark car park in Glen Esk and heads North over Mount Keen into Glen Tanar. This is a through walk so members who wish to do a shorter walk should remain on the bus and travel to the end point of the walk in Glen Tanar.

Route1:- Our walk starts at Invermark (NGR 447 804), where we head West past the church and before crossing the bridge take the track North Westwards passing the House of Mark. Continue on this track onwards to Queen’s Well keeping the Water of Mark on your left. Continue past Glenmark cottage and ascend the track of the Knowe of Crippley, on the west side of the Ladder Burn, to a split in the path (approx. NGR 405 852). Take the right hand option and head Northwards to the summit of Mount Keen (939M), the most easterly “Munro”. From the summit descend the Mounth Road into Glen Tanar, to the Coirebhruaich footbridge over the Water of Tanar (approx. NGR 406 896). Once over the bridge, turn right after a short distance and head North Eastwards on a good track down Glen Tanar which follows the Water of Tanar and passes the “halfway hut” to our bus at the carpark at NGR 480 966 near the Braeloine Visitor Centre.

Walking distance approx. 14 miles/22.5km, 2300ft/700M ascent.

Continue on the track, which follows the Water of Tanar on your left to (NGR 461 941) where a track goes off to the left and crosses a bridge over the Water of Tanar.
