Walk Notes

N.B. 9.00am start from Aberdeen.

The walk today takes our Club to the southern shores of the Moray Firth coast to walk W’wards from the village of Hopeman to Findorn Bay, by way of Burghead.

John Stewart put forward this walk on his “suggestion sheet” and your Committee included this outing in the AHWC 2015 Programme. Thanks must go to John who “recced” this walk and his accurate notes were included in this route sheet.

This walk is a “through one”, so members who require a shorter walk – please indicate your intentions with your committee member in charge of the bus.

We commence at the village of Hopeman (NGR 145 697), from where we pass the caravan site W’wards which soon swings N’wards and joins and follows the disused railway line W’wards (NGR 141 695), passing St. Aethans well (NGR 120 690) and onwards on this nice tarred path towards the “maltings” and soon the old fishing town of Burghead. From here on a clear day looking N’wards, you will view the hills of Sutherland across the Moray Firth. You have a choice here, as you can either visit Burghead or stay on the Moray Coastal Trail. On the south side of Burghead, we continue S’wards and W’wards along Burghead Bay, either through the Roseile Forest paths or along the beach (high tides for Burghead today are 0055 and 1315, low tides are 0705 and 1935) towards the RAF Kinloss airfield and onwards to the carpark at the north end of Findhorn Bay.

Your bus will be parked at the dunes carpark on Findhorn Bay at approx. (NGR 036 648).

Walking distance approx. 10 miles

Bus departs at 4.30pm.

In the event of an emergency arising, the person in charge of the outing should be contacted, if possible, before the police are contacted.

Relevant telephone number for Grampian Police is 0845 600 5700 or 999.

Committee member in charge today is Alistair Condie
