The Hill of Wirren is the large featureless mass of hill over 2000 feet high between Glen Esk and Glen Lethnot in Angus. Today’s walk traverses the hill from west to east.
The walk commences at NGR 535.787 about a quarter of a mile beyond Millden Lodge in Glen Esk, where a secondary road branches left off the glen road and passes through trees to cross a bridge over the River North Esk. This road leads to the left for Dalhastnie Farm but we pick up a track which diverts sharp right to cross the Burn of Beag before turning and following the burn southwards. It climbs up a ridge to reach another burn – the Burn of Garrat which rises up towards the ridge leading up to the 678 metre summit of the Hill of Wirren (2223ft) From there the lesser top of West Wirren (628m,2059 ft) lies about a mile to the northwest of this. Our route however turns eastwards for about a mile to reach the top of the East Wirren (639m,2095 ft), with its trig point a few yards further east of this. From the top we descend eastwards to pick up a track which heads over the Hill of Corathro before descending eastwards to Little Tullo Farm where the farm access road leads past Dalbog Farm to pick up a road leading southeastwards to Gannochy Farm on the B966. Turn right and follow the road for about a mile into Edzell village. The bus will be parked on the outkirts of the village near the church, up the side road leading towards Edzell Castle.
