Walk Notes

Our walk today traverses the hills and moors from the Braes of Glenlivet, through the Blackwater Forest to the Cabrach in the Deveron Valley.

Because this walk is a through-route, any member(s) who require a shorter walk would have to travel to the finishing point with the bus and do their own thing in the Cabrach area. This is possible, so if any member(s) should require a shorter walk, please advise your committee member in charge of the bus so that early discussions can take place with the driver.

The walk commences in Glenlivet, approximately 400 yards north of Chapeltown (NGR 242 215). Take the secondary road opposite the telephone box which heads NE’wards towards Achnascraw and Rhindu. Take the left farm track which heads, firstly northerly and then after a split in the path, NE’wards towards the ruined farm of Burnside of Thain. Cross the Blye Water at a footbridge and contour the north shoulder of Dog’s Craig before the path splits again. Take the left hand option (NW’wards), to join a wide track on the south side of the River Livet. Turn right and soon head NE’wards, and follow this track towards Suie after crossing the Kymah Burn. Continue northwards from Suie on this track for about 350m and take the right hand track at a junction. This track heads firstly NE’wards towards an unnamed point at 486m, but soon swings easterly along the south shoulder of Carn Daimh (ignore the path forking left at NGR 308 265) to eventually reach the Black Water. Here the track fords the river at NGR 330 267, but if there is difficulty crossing, the alternative is to head for a mile, northwards, to cross a bridge over the river opposite Blackwater Lodge. From here (on the east bank of the river), a wide track heads southwards to regain your original route at the fording site. Continue eastwards from the ford past Dead Wives Hillock towards an unclassified road at Aldivalloch and after a right fork at a junction near Aldunie farm, head eastwards for Milltown and onwards to Cabrach where our bus will be conveniently parked.
