The through walk today starts from the Glen Tanar parking area, walking up the Glen with the option of climbing Cairn Leuchan and/or Pannanich Hill before descending into Ballater.
The walk starts at the parking area near the visitor centre in Glen Tanar NGR479 965. Cross the bridge, turn right and follow the track which passes St. Lesmo’s Chapel and turn right at the T junction, continue to cross a bridge on the right passing a loch on the right. The track continues up the glen, keeping to the North side of the Water of Tanar passing the “Half Way Hut” (this is not half way on our walk) to soon emerge from the trees. Cross the bridge near Etnach to soon recross the river at another bridge. Continue to NGR 407 897 (approx.7miles/11.25km up the glen) East of the ruin of Shiel of Glentanar and near the foot bridge over the Water of Tanar on the left, where you have a choice of your onward route. The longer route (Route 1) continues Westwards to climb Cairn Leuchan and Pannanich Hill, the slightly shorter route (Route 2) climbs over Pannanich Hill.
Route 1:- Continue Westwards on the track remaining on the North side of the river passing the Shiel of Glentanar ruin. The path soon disappears but continue in a Westerly direction for approx. 0.75mile/1.3km to pick up a land rover track at NGR 380 891 and turn right, North, which climbs to Cairn Leuchan, NRG 380 910, the highest point on today’s walk at 2300ft/700m. Descend Northwards to a track junction at NGR 380919, take the track on the right, East then NorthEastwards, ignoring tracks off left and right, to climb Pannanich Hill, NGR 393 944, 1971ft/601m. From the summit continue on the track downhill which soon turns Westwards towards the House of Glenmuick. Just before the house take the track on the right Northwards and then left to pass between two small lochans. The path soon reaches the B976 road, cross the bridge into Ballater. The bus will be parked in the main car park in the square behind the church. NGR 369 957.

Route 2:- From NGR 407 897 take the path on the right, “Mounth Road”, which climbs steadily Northwards and then turns Northwest to cross over Lach na Gualainn to pick up a track at NGR 385 922. Turn right, Northwards to climb Pannanich Hill NGR 393 944. 601m. From the summit continue on the track downhill which soon turns Westwards towards the House of Glenmuick. Just before the house take the track on the right Northwards and then left to pass between two small lochans. The path soon reaches the B976 road, cross the bridge into Ballater. The bus will be parked in the main car park in the square behind the church. NGR 369 957.

Route 3:- Anyone requiring a shorter walk should remain on the bus and get dropped off near the crossroads in Dinnet. Walk into Ballater along the old Deeside railway track.

Route 4:- Alternatively get off the bus near Cambus o’ May to walk into Ballater along the old Deeside railway line.
