The walk today is in the Glen Tanar area, near Aboyne. This area has a number of very good walks of various lengths. Three walks are suggested below, but you might think differently. Please indicate on the “attendance sheet” which walk you will be doing. Also, this walk is a circular one, so members who require a shorter walk – please indicate your intentions with your committee member in charge of the bus.
(1). Clachan Yell (626m). From the bus, head up the glen past Home Farm and continue SW’wards into the forest to gain a stone bridge (NGR 461 941) over the Water of Tanar. Cross this bridge and at NGR 464 939, turn right, and head on a wide track uphill to eventually reach the edge of the forest. Contour the east side of White Hill and leave this path to follow a “line of least resistance” (no path) to reach the summit of Clachan Yell. Retrace your steps back to the bus.
Walking distance approx. 10 miles.
(2). Baudy Meg (488m). From the bus, cross the bridge over the Water of Tanar and head towards St. Elmo’s chapel. At a fork in the path, head up the Firmounth Road, above the Burn of Skinna, to the edge of the forest. At a junction in the path NGR 483 930, go left and head E’wards through the forest where we soon veer N’wards (NGR 496 929) along the east side of Baudy Meg. Climb to the summit just above this path. Descend from the summit, to the path. At a junction NGR 498 942, head NE’wards for about 200m and go left at a junction of 3 paths, into the forest past the west sides of Black Craig and Red Craig. Continue N’wards through the forest to reach a wide track (NGR 491 967) on the edge of the forest coming in from Bridge of Ess. Turn left here and head back to St. Elmo’s chapel and onwards to the Visitor Centre.
Walking distance approx. 10 miles.
(3). Glen Tanar and part of the Fungle Road. Cross the bridge and head E’wards behind the Braeloine visitor centre and continue along the south side of the Water of Tanar to cross a bridge over the Allt Roy. Take the next track right (NGR 503 969) , heading uphill to a Y junction (NGR 504 967), go left here and follow the N side of Craigendinnie to eventually meet the Fungle road (NGR 522 965). Turn right here and head S’wards passing the “rest and be thankful” stone seat and onwards towards “The Guard” cottage. Turn sharp right (NGR 520 955) here and your path soon swings W’wards to reach a split in the path. Turn left here (NGR 515 956) eventually into open moorland. Ford a burn after a while, and soon ignore a track on the right and another on your left (NGR 498 942) and continue E’wards and downhill passing a track on your right (NGR 486 938) and onwards to join the Firmounth Road at NGR 481 942. Turn right here and head downhill into Glen Tanar. Head towards St.Elmo’s chapel and onwards to the bridge over the Water of Tanar. Your bus will be parked at the Visitor Centre carpark (NGR 480 966). Distance approx. 8.5 miles
