On today’s walk, we head up Deeside to traverse some of the hills beyond Morven between the Dee and Don valleys.
The walk commences on the A939 Old Military Road approximately 2 miles northwest of the Gairnshiel Lodge bridge at NGR 314 029 just after crossing the Allt Glas-Choille where it begins to run southeastwards down into Glen Fenzie. A track leaves the road on the right and after passing the ruined house of Glen Fenzie, it heads northeastwards up a tributary burn for about a mile to reach a junction of tracks where Glen Beg and Glen More diverge. The burn is crossed and the right hand track is taken which climbs diagonally up the hillside to a col at NGR 332 044. We leave the track here and climb north northeastwards up a long ridge to reach the summit cairn of Mona Gowan (749m or 2456 feet)
From the summit cairn drop down eastwards to cross the ravine of Slacks of Glencarvie and then continue east northeastwards up the ridge of Mullachdubh to reach its top at 681m or 2233 feet. From Mullachdubh head approximately southeastwards towards Braes of Fintoch and then northeastwards towards Corbies Nest to eventually meet the track descending from the bothy at Praes Whin on the northern slopes of Morven. Go left and follow this track as in heads along the course of the Deskry Water northwards to near Badnagoach and continues northeastwards to eventually reach the A97 at Boultenstone. The bus will either be parked here, if a place is available, or just north of the Outdoor Centre at the crossroads near Rippachie at NGR 412 114.
