Walk Notes

Today’s walks start from the car park at Inverey. The longest walk is to the summit of the Munro Carn Bhac, and two shorter alternatives are also suggested. Anyone wishing to do a different walk should inform the committee member in charge of the bus.

  1. Carn Bhac. The walk commences at the carpark near the entrance of Glen Ey (NO 089893). Head westwards, past the telephone box, over the Ey Burn bridge, turn left and follow the wide path southwards and then westwards up the valley of the Allt Christie Beag to where this path peters out just below Carn Liath (NO036863). Continue southwards on a faint path over two unnamed tops at 788m and 801m to reach the summit of Geal Charn (NO032833). Head eastwards over an unnamed top at 920m to gain the main summit of Carn Bhac (946m; NO052833). From this top, head eastwards to pick up a path (not shown on the map) to reach Carn Creagach (NO069829) then head northwards to Cairn nan Seilach (NO075855) and continue on the path northeastwards downhill to the ruin at Auchelie (NO087864). After passing the ruin, turn left to join the main Glen Ey track heading northwards to the start point, where the bus will be parked. (NO089893).

  1. Carn Liath. The walk commences on the same route as for walk 1 until the point south of Carn Liath (NO036863). Here, follow the path north and then a short distance northwest to reach the summit of Carn Liath (818m; NO035867). The path then continues over Carn na Moine to eventually reach the road to the east of Muir Cott (NO082895); turn right here onto the road to return over the bridge to the start point (NO089893).

Walking distance approx. 9.5 miles; total ascent 1,591 feet

Total distance: 15174 m
Max elevation: 817 m

  1. Altanour Lodge. This walk follows the course of the Ey Burn up Glen Ey; to reach the ruin of Altanour Lodge and return by the same path is a distance of 11 miles, but the distance can be shortened by starting the return journey before reaching the lodge. From the car park (NO089893), take the southbound path to reach a bridge over the Ey Burn after about 0.5 km. Continue along the track past the Colonel’s Bed; there are two more bridges crossing the water before eventually reaching Altanour Lodge (NO083824). The return journey follows the same track.

Walking distance approx. 11 miles; total ascent 509 feet
