Glen Ey circ. (by Sgor Mor & An Socach)

The walk today takes us back into Deeside to visit one of the popular glens in this area. This walk is advertised as a through one, but the starting and finishing places are slightly apart by about 2.5km.

Members who require a shorter walk – please indicate your intentions with your committee member in charge of the bus.

Our bus will stop at a large lay-by on the Braemar to Linn o’ Dee road (NGR 118 898). We then have to walk along this road for about half a mile to our start point.

We start the walk proper near the Linn of Corriemulzie at a path (NGR 112 893) heading southwards from the Linn o’ Dee road. Follow this path past the dam and continue S’wards alongside the Corriemulzie Burn till the path almost peters out near Coire nam Freumh. Continue uphill to gain the summit of Carn na Drochaide (830m). Head S’wards along the ridge, keeping to the highest ground, to Creag a’ Mhadaidh (804m) and onwards around the edge of Coire na Lairige to the summit cairn of Sgor Mor (887m). From here, again keep to the highest ground, and gain the unnamed top at 855m and onto the eastmost top (938m) of An Socach. Continue SW’wards to the main top at 944m. From this summit head N’wards and descend steeply to gain a footbridge at NGR 083 823 over the Ey Burn. Cross this bridge, near the ruin of Altanour Lodge, turn right and head N’wards on a good wide track down the whole length of Glen Ey (by about 8.5km) to our bus. Your bus will be conveniently parked at the village of Inverey (NGR 088 892).
