Just beyond a cottage cross the burn and climb the hillside southwards on the Hill of Remora. From the top head westwards to reach the highest point of the walk – the summit of Sturdy Hill (544m, 1784 ft). Just beyond the top thee is a ruin of a cottage and beside it a track stars the descent on the eastern fringe of another hill, Craigancash, then skirts another one, Maolearn, before dropping down into Glen Esk near Haughend. From there take the glen road south eastwards to a junction at NGR 592.725. From here a path leaves the road on the right and drops down to follow the bank of the river North Esk where it inters a rocky defile known as the Rocks of Solitude. The path through the trees south eastwards eventually comes out on the B966 road near a bridge over the river. Turn right and follow the road for about a mile into the village of Edzell. The bus will be parked at a car park on the north side of the village to the west of the church.
