AHWC Gight Woods to Formartine Visitor Centre 7th January 2024 O/S
Map 30 (Fraserburgh) Bus departs Aberdeen at 9.00am.
Today’s walk starts near Methlick where we will visit Gight Castle and travel along part of the River Ythan. The Castle is a ruin but was built in 1560 and is associated with the dynasty of wild Gordons from whom was descended Lord Byron. This family’s story from first to last was crowded with “murder and sudden death”. Walk options available are;
1) From the bus at the small car park (NGR832399) head South on a forestry track through Badiebath Wood towards Gight Castle. Go through a gate at the Castle and after about 200m go right upwards on steps to arrive at Gight Woods. Follow the path westwards and eventually downhill to reach Otter Bridge (NGR 819389). Cross the bridge and turn right, then immediately left at NGR820389 and in about 100m, reach a good forestry track which is taken to pass by the Braes of Gight and Wood of Wardford before heading towards Methlick. On reaching Methlick, head southwards on a track following the B9005 road, to reach a gate (NGR871360). Go through this gate entering Gillha Wood and head towards Haddo House on a tarred road. Pass Haddo House , (NGR867348), and carry straight on to NGR864343, then veer left until NGR865341. Continue on the path until NGR864337 then walk straight ahead and go through a gate at Formartine Lake (or Keithfield Lake) NGR855335.Keep the loch on your left, passing near Mains of Kiethfield and the Keepers Cottage (NGR851334) towards the Formartine Visitor Centre where our bus will be parked (NGR850334). Distance = 9 miles (14.5 Kms.)

. 2) From the small car park (NGR832399) head South until (NGR832396) then turn left through the woods until (NGR841394), Turn right and cross the Waterloo Bridge over the River Ythan and join Route 1 above at (NGR840392) into Methlick. Continue following Route1 as above to reach the Formartine Visitor Centre. Distance = 6 miles (10Kms)

3) From Methlick car park (NGR857373) follow Route 1 as above. Distance = 4 miles (7Kms) Bus departs for our Festive Meal at Cock & Bull, Balmedie at 3.00pm.
