Walk Notes

N.B. 8.00am start from Aberdeen.

Todays walk, sees your Club back on Deeside, to traverse the hills and valleys around Lochnagar and the Balmoral Forest. Janet Rickard suggested this walk and your Committee included it in the 2015 Programme. This is a through-walk, so members requiring a shorter walk, please discuss your intentions with the Committee member in charge today, prior to you leaving the bus, so that early discussions can take place with the driver.

The main walk commences near Easter Balmoral at the Lochnagar Distillery (NGR 268 939), where we walk E’wards for approx. 400m to arrive at a split in the route. Take the right track towards Buailteach farm (but do not go to this farm) and head SE’wards on a wide track around the northern slopes of Tom Bad a’ Mhonaidh (473m). After another split in the path (NGR 290 922), we swing S’wards (the left option goes towards Bovaglie). This wide track continues in this direction for almost 4 miles to reach the remote cottage of Inchnabobart. Turn right here and head for Allt-na-giubhsaich, in approx. 1.4 miles. After crossing the bridge, just before the Lochnagar path turn off, our route swings SE’wards towards the Spittal of Glenmuick car park, where our bus will be waiting.

Walking distance approx. 9miles.

For an alternative walk, commence at the small hamlet of Easter Balmoral (NGR 265 941) and head SW’wards on an estate road which ascends up through the forest. At a junction (NGR 255 935), go left, S’wards, into Glen Gelder (passing the path going towards Gelder Shiel) and in approx. 5 miles, arrive at the turn off track to Lochnagar, near Clais Rathadan (do not take this track). Continue downhill on this wide track (firstly S’wards then E’wards) to soon reach Allt-na-guibhsaich and onwards (SE’wards) to our bus at the Spittal of Glenmuick car park (NGR 310 852). Walking distance approx. 9miles.

Bus leaves Spittal of Glenmuick (for the pub stop at Ballater) at 2.30pm.

In the event of an emergency, your Committee member in charge today should be contacted, if possible, before the police are contacted.

Telephone number for Grampian Police is 0845 600 5700 or 999.

Your Committee member in charge today is Hamish Clunas
