O.S.Map 44 (Ballater).

N.B. 8.00am start from Aberdeen.

Today’s walk, sees your Club on Deeside, to traverse the hills and valleys around Lochnagar. Hamish Clunas suggested this walk and your Committee included it in the 2016 Programme. This is a through-walk, so members requiring a shorter, or different walk, please discuss your intentions with the Committee member in charge today, prior to you leaving the bus, so that early discussions can take place with the driver.

The walk commences near Easter Balmoral (NGR 265 941), where we walk SW’wards uphill to arrive at a split in the route (NGR 255 935). Take the left track S’wards through the woods to gain open ground. Continue S’wards and, at a split in the path (NGR 258 908), (do not go to Gelder Shiel). We continue, passing Little Conacraig on our left, to another split (NGR 274 861) near Clais Rathadan. Go sharp right here, downhill and once going uphill again, look for a small cairn of white stones on your left marking a path. Take this path S’wards for almost 1.8 miles across Monelpie Moss, to gain a footbridge over the Glas-Allt burn. Cross this bridge and head downhill (SE’wards), past the Glas-Allt waterfall, to eventually arrive at Loch Muick. Walk along the track on the N’ern shore of the loch to our bus at the Spittal car park (NGR 310 851). Walking distance approx. 14miles.

For an alternative walk, at the split in the path (NGR 255 935) mentioned above, go to Gelder Shiel. Cross the burn on the small footbridge, just past the buildings. Continue to ascend SW’wards on the path past Creag Liath and Meall Coire an Saobhaidhe to the summit cairn of Lochnagar. Your onwards route can be made either along the rim of the NE corrie, down the new “ladder path” and past the “fox’s wells” to descend towards Allt-na-giubhsaich and onwards to the Spittal. OR, by descending into the valley of the Glas Allt burn and, onwards, and downwards, to Glas Allt Shiel and, then NE’wards along Loch Muick to the Spittal car park.

Walking distance approx. 14 miles.

Bus leaves Spittal of Glenmuick (for the pub stop at Ballater) at 5.00pm.

In the event of an emergency, your Committee member in charge today should be contacted, if possible, before the police are contacted.

Telephone number for Grampian Police is 0845 600 5700 or 999.

Your Committee member in charge today is David Fenlon
