Today’s walk is relatively easy being mostly on the route of an old railway track. As there was a large moorland fire last summer there will likely be areas where burnt heather and peat is still visible.
Route 1
The walk starts at Dunphail on the A 940 Grid ref` NJ 015483 a path leading to the trail is behind the local hall where we will be dropped off, turn right and follow it in a southerly direction. After 2 kilometres cross the Divie viaduct which has a good view point, continue south passing the slopes of Cairn Eny, an old croft where there is an interesting information board, the ruin of Lochenoun, the Halfway hut and on the left the remains of Auchlochan. The track curves right below the Knock of Braemoray. At Dava (10.7 Km) there is a short detour on the road to avoid some houses before rejoining the route.
At the 15 Km point the route runs close to the A939 passing near Huntly`s cave. Just before Lynmore the trail detours into some trees, at a side road NJ035314 turn right and just before the road left into the trees where a path roughly follows the road crossing a side road near Cottartown. At 034308 turn left down road for a few yards before turning right again through a plantation, after 400 metres turn right to rejoin the old rail route crossing the road via a bridge there`s another information board. At this point you`re only about 2Km from the end of the walk, continue along and on the left is the Speyside caravan Park. Approaching another viaduct at NJ025283 take the rough track on the right downhill, turn left past the entrance to the campsite onto Seafield Avenue and the bus will be parked somewhere along there.
Walking Distance Approx.15miles/24km.
Max elevation: 322 m
Min elevation: 183 m
Route 2
For anyone wishing to do a shorter walk stay on the bus till Dava alighting before the A940 joins the A939 (NJ 007392) and pick up the route from there.
Walking Distance Approx. 8.5 miles/13.7km.
Route 3
You may simply wish to have a wander round the woods on the east side of Grantown as there are several paths not marked on the map or follow the Speyside Way to the bridge over the river Spey at Cromdale.
Bus Departs for Aberdeen 6.00pm.
