Walk DetailsPub Stop?: No O/S Map Sheet No.: 29 and 37 Grid Ref. Start: Grid Ref. Finish Walk (Miles): Walk Hours: 10 Bus Time to Walk: Bus Time from Walk: Departure time from walk:
Our walk today takes us through a large part of Clashindarroch Forest, just south of Huntly and crosses the hills to the west of the forest before reaching our destination at the Grouse Inn on the A941 (Rhynie to Dufftown) road commonly known as The Cabrach.
Since there are many tracks and track junctions in the forest on this walk, members are advised for safety reasons to keep in groups, if possible, and to ensure that at least one member in each group carries the O.S. map sheets and can navigate.
We will be dropped off at the end of the secondary road near the farm of Drumfergue and the bus will then travel over the A941 road to be situated near the Grouse Inn, for our pick-up point. There are no suggested alternative walks today, as this is a scheduled “through walk”, unless you choose to travel with the bus to its destination and “do your own thing” in this area. Please advise your Committee organiser as to your intentions.
The walk commences at Drumfergue Farm (NGR 474.340) which is 4 miles up a
secondary road to the west of the A97 Rhynie to Huntly road near Collithie. Take the forest road to the south of Hill of Drumfergue and Auchindinnie Hill until a track junction is reached at NGR 452.330. Cross the burn here and head westwards, passing four tracks which at intervals break off to your right. Keep heading southwestwards to eventually reach a track junction at NGR 432 326. Cross the Lag Burn and head southwestwards, passing a track on your left and onwards passing a track on your right. Your route soon bends northwestwards and eventually emerges from the forest on to open ground below an un-named 527m hill. Follow the edge of the forest southwestwards to reach Black Hill (505m). From its summit, head northwestwards to reach the cairn of Daugh of Corinacy. From this point go southwestwards to the unnamed top at 478m and descend southeastwards to gain a track at NGR 396 300 which heads southwestwards to the A941 road passing Bank Farm on the way. Keep to a path along the east side of the Allt Deveron for about 2 miles to reach a footbridge just below Dalriach. Cross the bridge to the Grouse Inn where our bus will be parked at a convenient spot.
