O.S.Map 45 (Stonehaven and Banchory).
The walk today, follows first of all, a section of the Mearns coastline south of Stonehaven before entering the Dunnottar woods walkway. It follows closely the cliff tops to begin with, and since there are some sections without a path, care will have to be taken. In some places, it may be advisable to stay on the land side of the fence lines and follow the edges of the fields, particularly if windy. Your Club last did this walk in December 2013. Please exit the bus quickly, as there is no parking place for the bus, only a turning circle. This walk is a through-one, so members who require a shorter, or different walk – please indicate your intentions with your committee member in charge of the bus.
The walk commences at the hamlet of Crawton (NGR 879 798) at the Fowlsheugh RSPB Reserve site near Crawton Bay. Follow the path N’wards along the cliff tops until it peters out before reaching Hope Cove. Continue to Trelung Ness, Wine Cove, Thornyhive Bay, Tremuda Bay and Maiden Kaim, before reaching Old Hall Bay, to get spectacular views of Dunnottar Castle (Dun fhothair – Celtic for “the fort on the shelving slope”) to the north. From the castle car park, head inland along the unclassified road, passing East Newtonleys to eventually reach the A957 road near the old reservoir. Turn left and head SW’wards for a few hundred yards, to reach Glaslaw Car Park on your right. Enter the Dunnottar Woods and follow the path, which passes Lady Kennedy’s Bath, the Old Nursery and the Shell House, towards the outskirts of Stonehaven. Head for the beach boardwalk which links the harbour with the lido. Your bus will be conveniently parked near the swimming pool (NGR 875 861) at the north end of the town.
