O.S.Map 45 (Stonehaven and Banchory).

BUS LEAVES ABERDEEN at 8.00 am.

The walk today, follows first of all, a section of the Mearns coastline south of Stonehaven before entering the Dunnottar woods walkway. At Crawton, members will have to depart the bus fairly quickly as we cannot park the bus, as it has only a turning circle. The walk follows closely the cliff tops to begin with, and since there are some sections without a path, care will have to be taken. In some places, it may be advisable to stay on the land side of the fence lines and follow the edges of the fields, particularly, if windy.

This walk is a through one, so members who require a shorter walk – please indicate your intentions with your committee member in charge of the bus, before leaving.

The walk commences at the hamlet of Crawton (NGR 879 798) at the Fowlsheugh RSPB Reserve site near Crawton Bay. Follow the path N’wards along the cliff tops until it peters out before reaching Hope Cove. Continue to Trelung Ness, round Wine Cove, Thornyhive Bay, Tremuda Bay and Maiden Kaim, reaching Old Hall Bay, to get spectacular views of Dunnottar Castle (Dun fhothair – Celtic for “the fort on the shelving slope”) to the north. From here (NGR 879835), head inland past the car park for Dunnottar Castle & walk north along the road for a short distance before taking the road on the left at NGR 876839. Walk along the unclassified road, passing first Dunnottar Mains then East Newtonleys to eventually reach the A957 road (the old road northwards/southwards) near the old reservoir. Turn left and head SW’wards for a few hundred yards, to reach Glaslaw Car Park on your right. Enter the Dunnottar Woods (NGR 864845) and follow the path, which passes Lady Kennedy’s Bath, the old Nursery and the Shell House, towards the outskirts of Stonehaven. Head for the beach boardwalk which links the harbour with the lido. Your bus will be conveniently parked near the swimming pool (NGR 875 865) at the north end of the town.

Walking distance approx. 7 miles

Bus departs at 3.00 pm.
