Walk Notes


This months club walk will be in the Stonehaven area offering a variety of walking via coastal paths, woods, the castle itself, the war memorial and if you have time you can even take in a deep fried mars bar.

Main walk – coastal route
Note: where the path is not visible or if there are strong winds this may involve crossing over a fence into the edge of a field. Please wear appropriate footwear and take gaters if you have them.

  1. Leave the RSPB car park heading South until you reach a gate and go through this.
  2. Follow the good path North until you reach a bird hide.
  3. After this hide, continue to follow the thin coastal path north
  4. Eventually you will reach another good path just south of Dunnottar Castle. Head past to Dunnottar Castle and take in the view.
  5. Head North with the sea on your right along the good path until you reach the War Memorial where you can head up and back or skip if you are short of time.
  6. The path will come to a road and shortly after on the right at NO875852 there will be a path down to Stonehaven itself.
  7. Go through Wallace Wynd, Albert Lane, The Cross and then turn right at the cross itself. Go through Keith Place and turn left on the Bay Walk beach side path
  8. Cross over one and then another bridge, turn left at the public toilets and the bus should be at the car park.

Walk 2 – Dunnottar woods, Dunnottar Castle and War memorial

  1. Leave the car park turning left and then turn right at the toilets. Cross over two bridges and turn right after the second bridge.
  2. Turn left at Bridgefield, follow it round on to Dunnottar Avenue, left into Carron Gardens all the way to the end and enter into Dunnottar Woods.
  3. Follow the path keeping to the left when it forks to reach the Shell House. Continue on to exit the woods and at NO865846 turning right and then left past the covered reservoir. The road goes past ‘East Newtonleys’ and at ‘Mains of Dunnottar’ exits out to a road.
  4. At this road turn right and then left. Head down to Dunnottar Castle and take in the view.
  5. Head North with the sea on your right along the good path until you reach the War Memorial where you can head up and back or skip if you are short of time.

The bus is often fully booked which means any cancelled seats can be re-allocated to those persons on a waiting list. Anyone unsuccessful in booking a seat should contact Gilbert who will put them on a waiting list.
