Walk Notes

Today’s walk takes us on a section of the famous Speyside Way. Alan Wallace suggested this walk and it was included in our programme for 2013. We will be dropped off in the village of Craigellachie (NGR 287 450), near the A95 Keith to Grantown on Spey road and will follow the Speyside Way waymark posts along the side of the River Spey. If any member(s) require(s) a shorter walk, please advise you Committee member in charge of the bus today, so that early discussion can take place with the driver.

From the bus parked at the hotel square, pick up the path below the village adjacent to the River Spey and head SW’wards along the waymarked trail of the Speyside Way. You will pass, Charlestown of Aberlour, cross the Burn of Aberlour footbridge, walk past Delmore and Carron House before crossing to the north side of the River Spey on a bridge near the Carron distillery (NGR 224 412). Continue NW’wards on the waymarked trail and eventually the path veers SW’wards near Nether Borlum, but soon veers W’wards near the distillery at Knockando. Once again our route soon veers S’wards but keeps to the west side of the river, passing Dalvenuan and Mains of Kirdells and soon runs under the B9138 near a carpark to run parallell with the B9102 (Upper Knockando to Grantown on Spey road) at a bridge near to Birchview. The Speyside Way continues in a SW’erly direction and eventually crosses a bridge over the river to the south side of the River Spey near Cragganmore village (NGR 167 366), where our bus will be parked at a convenient place.
