O.S.Map 45 (Stonehaven).
Bus leaves Aberdeen at 9.00.am.
Our walk today, takes us along a delightful stretch of the Cowie Water and through part of Fetteresso Forest to a mountain bike trail carpark, just west of the village of Rickarton on the “Slug Road”, on the A957. We will be dropped off on the A957, at a small car park, just SE of Rickarton House. The bus will then travel westwards to our pick-up point. If any members require a shorter walk, or different walk, please advise your committee member in charge today. Our walk commences at a very small carpark on the A957 (844 883). The bus will not be able to enter this parking area, so members will have to have everything with them and will have to alight from the bus reasonably quickly on a fairly busy road.
Head, from the car park, westwards on a good path, then NW through the forest to a split in the path. Go right here and soon descend to the edge of the Cowie Water. Continue southwards until your path ascends quite steeply to gain an old wooden gate on your right. Go right, past this gate and follow this path SW wards until it reaches an unclassified road at approx. NGR 828 874. Go left onto this road for about 400m. Turn sharp right off this road and walk SW’wards until another split in the path. Go left and pass around a “Forestry Commission” bar type gate and continue uphill on this wide forest track. Keep left at another split in the path and continue southwards along the edge of the forest ignoring a path to your right. Keep straight ahead towards Eff Hill and pass below some electricity wires to eventually arrive at NGR 773 863. Turn left (southwards) for about 500m. This path soon swings west then northwest to gain another path junction at NGR 766 861. Continue northwards for about a mile. Now, you are on the Cryne’s Cross Mounth road which you follow slightly downhill. Cross the Cowie Water on a wide footbridge (NB – the only footbridge over the river). Bear right on the north side of the river, and ascend the track NE wards, past the east side of Hill of Hobseat. Do not take the first track on the right to Stonehouse, but continue E’wards along the southside of Hill of Three Stones. Keep on this track until a T-junction at NGR 784 894. Turn sharp right (SE’wards) and descend to our carpark at Rickarton where our bus will be parked (NGR 789 893) Walking distance approx. 11 miles.
Bus departs at 3.30pm.
In the event of an emergency arising, the person in charge of the outing should be contacted, if possible, before the police and the emergency services are contacted.
Relevant telephone number for Grampian Police is 0845 600 5700 or 999.
