N.B. 9.00am start from Aberdeen.
The walk today sees your Club on the North Sea Coast to the north of Aberdeen to visit the Sands of Forvie National Nature Reserve. We also plan to finish our walk today with a festive meal at the Newburgh Golf Club. Your Club last visited this area in January 2010 on a lovely crisp cloudless day. This walk is a through one, so members who require a shorter, or different walk – please indicate your intentions with your committee member in charge of the bus.
We commence our walk from the car park at St .Catherine’s Dub, just to the north of the village of Collieston (NGR 043 286). From the bus, head back through the village to its south end, where we go through a gate and enter the Forvie National Nature Reserve. Continue SW’wards along a good cliff path passing Perthudden, North Broad Haven and Hackley Bay to eventually reach Hackley Head (or Forvie Ness). Continue S’wards to walk above Rockend to reach a track junction. A waypoint sign here, either directs you inland towards the roofless ruin of 12th Century Forvie Kirk or SW’wards along the coast with the North Sea on your left. We head southwestwards along the coast to eventually veer NW’wards through the huge sand dunes towards the east side of the River Ythan estuary with the village of Newburgh on its far shore. Continue N’wards, with the River Ythan on your left, to eventually reach the small car park by the A975 road, ignoring a track coming in from the right at approx. NGR 005 268. Cross the road bridge over the River Ythan and walk into Newburgh where our bus will be conveniently parked at the golf club.
Walking distance approx. 7 miles
