Walk Notes

The walk today follows a section of the Mearns coastline south of Stonehaven. It follows closely the cliff tops most of the way and since there are some sections without a path care will have to be taken. In some places it may be advisable to stay on the land side of the fencelines and follow the edges of the fields particularly if windy.

The walk commences at Catterline (NGR.870.783) where we head north round Trelong Bay to the headland of the Garran continuing on to Crawton Bay where a path is picked up through the Fowlsheugh RSPB Reserve. For anyone wishing to do a slightly shorter walk they can be dropped off at Crawton rather than Catterline. The path peters out before we reach Hope Cove. Continue to Trelung Ness, round Wine Cove, Thornyhive Bay, Tremuda Bay, and Maiden Kaim reaching Old Hall Bay to get a spectacular view of Dunnottar Castle.
Pick up the path which leaves the access path to Dunnottar Castle continuing round Castle Haven and passing the war memorial which looks onto Strathlethan Bay. Continue down the steep path into Stonehaven. The bus will be parked in the swimming pool car park at the north end of the town which can be reached from the boardwalk which starts at the car park near the toilets at the harbour
